Tonight I’ve been watching Louis Theroux and his irreverent style take on the high rollers atthe Hilton, Las Vegas. I know this program is from a few years ago (made obvious by being on Dave, and the Stardust still standing). I’m not he biggest Theroux fan, I can find his style very awkward due to a lack of flexibility and charm, but in Vegas this seems to lift and we see a more open friendly presenter. With questioning, and speaking to these people you find out in a round about way that gambling to a gambler is not about the winning or losing, but the taking part. Now, this may seem a very British way of looking at the situation but it’s true, these people find the thrill in winning, feel the downs in losing, but to them the euphoria completely out ways the downsides. I think we all probably know this feeling, whether you play on the fruit machines in your local pub, go to a casino, or even go to Vegas. These things are very addictive, even to the people who seem to have the most self-control. If you don’t like gambling, then maybe I can explain in a couple of different ways, many people would have felt it with the ‘just one more go/game’ effect’, whether it’s Football Manager, the lottery or even at the theme park when you go on a ride, you want to go to another, you become addicted, and feel disappointment when you go on a poor ride. This program goes on to prove that, that to these high rollers there is disappointment, they all leave having lost lots of money, disappointed, but overall happy they did it.
But this leads me to something else, these people can afford it (or can they), and gambling is not just the past time of the idle rich. We are all the same, so poor or rich if you are a gambler you are a gambler. I am a gambler, walking away is hard, and it takes a lot of effort, I have spent and was lucky in Vegas, I won enough to gamble more (a whole other issue). It would have been good if he could have spoken to regular tourists, and to see how they coped with Las Vegas, if they over spent, how a win felt (I imagine the same as many of the high rollers, ‘I can win again’ and ‘my luck is in’). Or maybe another program, I think Louis style would suit it, the holiday maker would feel so awkward that they wouldn’t be laughing it off.

However what this does show is how the casino’s are trying to show a public face of how we like to stop people from spending too much, but they don’t, and won’t pull people off the tables, especially as they don’t know the financial situation of the players, and this is a good thing to see on a tv show, and very unusual to see a casino (The Hilton in this case) allow proper filming of gamblers and the tables. It’s not wholly open, and you only see the same ‘personal client’ who’s obviously been assigned to the BBC, and with Louis not being a gambler himself, and feeling uncomfortable (whether a persona or not) allows an out side view. This program doesn’t say gambling is bad, or that it’s good. I like that, because the last thing I need is made to feel bad about gambling, as we are about everything else.

While Louis Theroux's Las Vegas adventure didn't surprise or challenge my perceptions of that vacuous place, his friendly style, affable nature, open questioning and muted stares pricked enough holes in those involved to make it worthwhile. The overall message was mixed, but it was entertaining to see unfold. Not as jackpot, but worth a punt. Ultimately I enjoyed the show, even if it wasn’t as wide ranging as it could have been, and was controlled by the casino. But hey I like to gamble and love Vegas. Gamble away if you can afford it, only spend what you can afford to lose, and enjoy it, if you don’t enjoy it whether you win or lose, then there really is not point to it!
